HODAG is a brand of unique Deer communication products that were brought to the market to allow hunters to capitalize on a Deers natural instinct to communicate via scent. HODAG tools were not developed to trick a deer, rather to allow the hunter to improve their ability to Inventory, Pattern & Hunt by establishing a licking stick in an area that you choose. This can help you to get better images on trail camera, gain a better understanding of deer movement and stop a deer on a trail near your stand for a shot.

Choosing a Location
Food plots, logging roads, field edges, & heavily traveled deer trails are all great options. If you are using the Licking Stick as a hunting aid, place the base where you would like a deer to stop for a shot and serve as a yardage making reference. If your goal is more to inventory your herd, place the base in a heavily traveled area. Please note that prior to placement, think about your goals for this tool. Will you want to use it as a hunting aid for when you are on stand, a scouting tool to inventory the herd, or both? Keeping that in mind will help you decide the best place to set up. Please Note, this works best if its placed is an area that already has deer passing through it. You may need to experiment which species of trees and location works best in your area.
Deploying Your Set Up
Bed & Anchor your FlexPlate
Once you have your optimal area picked out, level out an area a few inches deep similar to bedding a trap. (see informational video links found on website) Be sure to level the FlexPlate the best you can from the start. This will help you greatly when it comes to balancing your licking stick. Drive in the stakes and cover up the FlexPlate with dirt you removed. This step is important as it will help ensure that the FlexPlate is seeded firmly to the ground and doesnt wiggle loose.
Cut Your Own Branch & Insert Into Spring
Pick out a branch or sapling that is roughly ? of an inch or less. We have seen the best success with saplings that are 6 or less. Experiment with different types of trees in your area to see what gets the most interaction from deer. Cut your sapling/branch and insert into the top of the spring. Use the 3 thumbscrews to tighten your branch to the bse; similar to a Christmas Tree holder. Remember, you are simulating and activating a licking stick, not specifically a Rub Post or Scrape Tree. Bigger is not better when it comes to a licking stick found in the wild.
Apply AllSeason Activation Scent
Use the dripper to apply AllSeason Scent to the leaves and branches. This will help stimulate the deer to lick the branches or use their own glands. This helps to get your communal licking branch started. Be sure to cover all areas of the branch/sapling. After a week or so the leaves will dry out and fall off dont worry that is ok.
